Abstract
This study aimed to assess the performance of the Hooshab smart irrigation management system in reducing irrigation water use, increasing Mihan wheat cultivar grain yield, and improving physical water productivity in Aligoodarz County, Iran. The experiment was conducted over two growing seasons (2023–2024 and 2024–2025) as a comparative field study under a conventional sprinkler irrigation system, involving two irrigation management treatments: smart irrigation management using the Hooshab system and the conventional farmer-managed irrigation practice (control). Four independent field replicates, each with an approximate area of 10 ha, were selected for each treatment. Each field was managed, irrigated, and evaluated as an independent experimental unit. Irrigation water applied, grain yield, and physical water productivity were measured. Data were analyzed using Independent Samples t-tes at the 5% probability level. The results showed that irrigation management treatment had a significant effect on irrigation water use, grain yield, and physical water productivity (P < 0.05). Averaged over the two growing seasons, water use under the hooshab treatment was 17.15% lower than in the conventional practice. Meanwhile, grain yield, increased slightly by 8.15%. onsequently, water productivity rose by an average of 30.3%. By optimizing irrigation timing and application depth, the Hooshab smart irrigation management system reduced water use while improving wheat yield and physical water productivity. These findings suggest that the Hooshab system can serve as an effective decision-support tool for sustainable irrigation management in semi-arid regions.
